And

Samambaia root is native to the rainforests located in South America as well as some of the drier forests that exist in Latin America. The plant itself is a fern in the Polypody family, which comprises in excess of 6,000 species of plants that grow in tropical regions of the Northern and Southern hemispheres. In addition there are 75 species within the Polypodium genus of plants-many of these herbal memory plants have used for medical treatments for hundreds of years. The concept of using herbs for memory improvement is certainly not a new discovery one medical science is only beginning to accept. In the past memory herbs were a part of alternative medicine that was not accepted by those in the field of traditional medicine.

Medicinal Uses

In addition to the use of Samambaia root as an herbal memory improvement option it has many other uses as well. Certainly its place in the list of herbs for memory is an important one, but memory herbs do not rank as high on the list of priorities as do herbs for other medical conditions. Some of the other ways this herb is used include the following:

* Protection of the brain cells
* Blood cleansing
* Protection of the cells of the skin
* Helps increase urine output
* Helps reduce inflammation
* Lowers blood pressure to prevent hypertension
* Relieves symptoms of psoriasis
* Stimulates the sweat glands
* Acts as an immunomodulator
* Works as a cough suppressant
* Helps reduce phlegm
* Fights free radicals in order to prevent cancer
* Has natural sunscreen properties

Chemical Composition

Samambaia root is comprised of flavonoids, alkaloids and lipids. In fact, this herbal memory plant is one of the richer sources of both lipids and fatty acids, the latter of which makes the plants essential as memory herbs. It is believed that its therapeutic properties are the result of the presence of its chemical composition. Within the active composition of these herbs to improve memory is another group of chemicals named sulphoquinovaoyldiacylglycerols. These chemicals are included in documentation and have been patents supporting their existence as the active chemical in these herbs for memory.

Several chemicals have been identified as components in the Samambaia root including adenosine, alkaloids, anachidonic acid, arabinopyranosides, calagualine, and many more including the important linoleic acids and linolenic acids that are part of the essential fatty acids and likely to be another reason these herbs are able to act as memory herbs. The presence of fatty acids within Samambaia is likely to contribute to their ability to work as herbs for memory. If you look at the relationship between fish oil, a dietary supplement containing Omega-3 and the components of this herbal memory plant family you can certainly see a favorable comparison within the chemical composition-at least as it relates to the linoleic and linolenic acids. That doesn't mean other components to not contribute to memory improvement but rather than these two chemicals are possibly the main links.
